Baseball Babe #123 Honors: OF Clint Frazier 2013 Cleveland Indians First Round MLB Draft Pick Selection #5

Cleveland Indians
Clint Frazier
First Round #5 Selection

All in was the theme of the 2013 MLB draft for the Cleveland Indians. Losing a second round pick and a competitive balance round B pick for signing free agents Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn. With out having those picks the Indians had to make a pick that will make it to the majors with star potential.

The pick of 6'1" Clint Frazier an outfielder at Loganville high school out of Georgia. Frazier has upside tools with his bat speed that translates into having plus power potential. An outstanding athlete his skills are not limited to hitting he also has a great arm and speed in the outfield, playing center in high school. His talent in the outfield needs some work with raw talent evident he needs better instincts in playing the position. So, will most likely end up in the corner outfield spots when climbing to the big leagues due to the power potential in his bat and limited skills in the field. An above average arm will play well in right field.

The Indians could be looking at a 25 home run .275 batting average and 10-15 steals when ready for Progressive Field play. His senior year at Loganville HS. he hit 17 dingers with a .485 BA. Hoping that the jump to the wood bat from aluminium will not be a problem with the showcase of bat speed.

Their is a risk in taking a high schooler and the Cleveland Indians in the past usually look to the college boys in the draft. The last high schooler taken was Francisco Lindor selected 8th in the 2011 first year player MLB draft, Lindor the #1 rated player in the Indians minor league organization is still a year or two away from the big club.

Cleveland hopes that Clint's youth at age 18 on draft day will give them time to develop his skills. His size will have a natural growth progression at 6'1" and 190 lbs which should enhance his power stroke as he goes up the minor league ladder.

If Clint follows the path the Cleveland Indians have for the future star he should be a middle of the order bat. Being right handed Clint will hopefully by the time he gets to the big leagues find a lefty in the line up that can counter his power and take the Indians to the playoffs many years to come.
