2010-2011 NBA Playoffs Western Conference Semi-finals Thunder Grizzlies Preview

The first round is over and we will see a new look in the western conference playoffs. The Memphis Grizzlies and the Oklahoma City Thunder look to get to the elite status and climb up the playoff ladder.

Memphis Grizzlies

The giant killers Memphis Grizzlies are looking to keep on slaying the beasts of the west. The first round was a huge step for the Grizzlies taking down the #1 seed San Antonio Spurs. Excited to be in the playoffs they showed they belonged by electrifying the fans in Memphis and a sell out crowd.
Zach Randolph the biggest key to the winning success will see much more athleticism in the second round with the OKC Thunder. The one man wrecking crew that has carried the load all season and so far in the playoffs will need help as an up and down ball game seems to be brewing. I could still see Zach getting double doubles as he had an average of 21.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in the first round. In the second round, I could see it continue as they feed the big man the ball and his aggressiveness around the basket will get him his rebounds, but once again help will be needed.
Rebounding will be as important as scoring against the Thunder so the fast break can be slowed down and the second chance points will be limited. The job will be up to Marc Gasol to keep the ball in the hands of the Grizzlies more than the Thunder to out weigh the scoring chances back in favor of the Grizzlies. He also will need those long arms to attack the scorer as the penetrate to allow for the block shot.
Mike Conley will need to increase his 14.3 points scoring average and help distribute the ball more to keep the defense on their hills. He has the ability to create his own shot and that might be a key to stop the double teams of Randolph.
The back court defensive presence of Tony Allen will have a huge affect in the outcome of the series as he will need to be a bee to honey on the ball!
If the pieces fall like in round one we could see something spectacular.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Can you hear it the Thunder rolling? Do you think the Oklahoma City Thunder and there fans are happy to see the Grizzlies instead of the Spurs? Do you think it matters to this young team and there passion to win it all? The regular season series belonged to the Grizzlies 2-1? Playoff basketball usually brings out the intensity of the players and the team. So which team will step up?
Kevin Durant leads the youth movement in OKC as he scored an average 32.4 points a game in round one. He is not one dimensional his very quick feet and hands will serve him well on the defensive side. He gets at least a steal a game with a highlight "Thunder" dunk at the end of it. Look for more of that in the second round as the distribution of the ball will goo through Durant as the offense is built with the franchise player getting most of the touches. Seeming that Memphis will not be able to contain Durant the highlight reel they will need to make sure he doesn't feed his teammates easy baskets like the alley oops he will be recieving.
Russell Westbrook will be looking to get his name filling up the stat sheet as well. He has delivered 23.8 points a game in the first round as the Spurs had a tough time matching up. Mike Conley will have his hands full trying to keep the ball in front of him and stopping the slash to the basket or the pass to Durant.
Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins will have the tough task of stopping the force of Zach Randolph. That I believe it will be asking to much so the team will have to live and die with stopping the perimeter from getting the ball down low and to help out Perkins.
The x-factor could be James Hardin and his ability play defense and stop the inlet passes and creating steals and start the fast breaks of this running young team.

Oklahoma City Thunder in 5 games!

2010-2011 NBA Playoffs Western Conference Semi-finals Lakers Mavericks Preview

Breaking down the western conference will not be easy with the battles ahead we should see some "amazing" basketball!
Let's first look at the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Dallas Mavericks match up!

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers the highest seed left in the western conference after San Antonio Spurs were ousted should get the confidence. The regular season the Lakers took 2 of 3 games away from the series against the Dallas Mavericks. The triangle offense of the Lakers has always given the Mavericks trouble and with the five headed monster of Kobe Bryant, Paul Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and defensive juggernaut Ron Artest the Mavericks know there will be a war on the court.
Kobe Bryant scored 22.5 points a game in the first round against the New Orleans Hornets can he build on that now that we know he is fully healthy from the ankle debauchery.
Andrew Bynum needs to keep pounding the boards at the 10.3 clip to be effective on the glass. The Mavericks have been a little stronger down the stretch in rebounding.
Paul Gasol does all the little things well with solid defense and the talent to get rid of the ball to the best option to score is a true asset for the Lakers.
The floor general and veteran Derek Fisher will need to distribute the ball to the big men as well as take the defense away from them.
The x-factors could be the 3 point shooting of streaky Steve Blake or the athleticism of Lamar Odom. Will the defense of the Mavericks be able to stop the monster?

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks had the Mavs Dancers shaking the pom poms after the first round of the 2011 NBA Western Conference Playoffs and anticipate more of it in the second round. The Mavericks took care of the Portland Trailblazers in 6 games. The triangle may work for the Lakers but the screen and roll is the bread and butter for the Mavs.
Jason Kidd has proven over his all star career he can get the rock and the assist totals on the scoreboard. The mesmerizing display of acrobatics as the ball flys across the court has the fans are their feet night after night. Will he be able to showcase that skill against Derek Fisher?
Dirk Nowitzki and the patented fade away jumper as a 7' footer has added to the 164 points already scored in the first round. No one on the Mavericks team is more hunger than Dirk. He has taken defeat as the franchise player for the Mavericks for to many years and wants to prove to the fans of Dallas and the world that all the MVP chants are warranted. He has taken the team on his back good and bad and this year he wants the good. Dirk will probably get his so the rest of the offense will need to step it up!
One of those needs to step it up will be Shawn Marion and against the formidable defense of Ron Artest this could be the biggest challenge for the Mavericks in round 2. Getting off the unorthodox shot will be the task and skill that has been his ticket in the NBA, so we will see how he can create off the dribble more in this round.
The paint will be shared by Bynum and Tyson Chandler and his effectiveness around the rim will be tested. He did have 57 rebounds with 27 being defensive in the first round so we could see a clash of the big men.

The drama between these two are growing as the Mavericks have chopped at the bits trying to get over the hump in the West and the Lakers being the Champions let's hope the drama unfolds with electric games!

John Smoltz - The golf debut of a someday Hall of Fame 23 year MLB pitcher from the Atlanta Braves on the Nationwide Tour turned out to be very disappointing when he shot 12 over 84. That ended the opening round with Smoltz in dead last in the opening round of the South Georgia Classic at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Smoltz as an amatuer did play in the Bob Hope Classic and AT&T Pebble Peach National Pro-Am. At the age of 43 he hopes to hone his skills and make it in the Champions Tour at age 50. With the drive of an athlete as hie pedigree we hope for the best and a turnaround from the dismal 84 shot in the Nationwide.
