Saturday Chatter: Harmon Killebrew, Andre Ward, Surfing, Manchester United

Harmon Killebrew - Starting the chatter this Saturday will be with a tragedy of the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals legend Harmon Killebrew ending his fight with cancer and opting to be comfortable in hospice. This hits home since my step-mother is going thru chemotherapy as of today for lung cancer. All the fans of baseball got a privilege to see this Hall of Fame for 22 years of baseball amassing many accolades to his credit. He hit 573 home runs in his career putting him in the lucrative 500 HR club at the time of retirement put him at 5th all time now he sits at 11th all time. He was the 1969 American League MVP, AL All Star 13 times and 6 time home run leader. Most of all one of the classiest players to ever put on the uniform and trot the bases.

2011 NHL Playoffs - The last four are ready to get their hands on the Stanley Cup!

Manchester United - The penalty kick by England stricker Wayne Rooney helped Manchester United get a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. The goal sealed the deal to win a record 19th English Title they shared with Liverpool. United has a seven point lead in the Barclays English Premier League and Chelsea needs 7 points and 2 matches to go to take the lead. The season has been filled with great stars stepping up defender Rio Ferdinand, midfielder Ryan Giggs, fullback Patrice Evra and goalie Edwin Van Der Sar. They are the champions and much respect is deserved.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. - The sport of Nascar has a big star in Dale Jr. and now it has the largest giant HD television in the world 80 ft tall and 200 ft wide it will debut May 21st at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dale Jr. even took a test drive by playing a race car video game on the big screen. I wonder how Jerry Jones and his Dallas Cowboys Stadium feel about the competition? Being able to watch the track and the television in tandem as you get a look at replays and visual commentary as the race is raced in front of you with the sound of the cars, the motion of wind as they race by and the crowd around you has to be worth the price of addmission. I guess watching it at home on a 60inch HDTV just won't be the same!

Andre Ward - Who is Andre Ward? He is the WBA 168lb champion boxing phenom that is in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals. He will be boxing against Arthur Abraham on May 14th at the Home depot Center in Carson, California. This will be a tall task for Abraham since Andre ward is 23-0 and looking for 24. In 2004 he won the Olympic Gold Medal as a light heavyweight and has looked to be the best in the pros since 2004 he has been undefeated. In 2007 he did move to the Super Middleweight. Boxers at the 2004 Summer Olympics: Juan Manuel López, Amir Khan, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Aleksandr Povetkin, Odlanier Solís, Andre Ward, Akhil Kumar!

Surfing - I wanted to bring a little summer to the fesivities so let's take a look at the 2011 Surfer Magazine Swimsuit edition video!

Memphis Grizzles - They took down the big dogs, the #1 seeds and the reputation of a the one time NBA Championships San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the 2011 NBA Playoffs. Six games was all they needed to take down the giants and with that Zach Randolph out played the legend Tim Duncan to help his team advance. Zach with the help of Marc Gasol and Tony Allen put away Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker by simply out rebounding and out scoring them. The fans cheered and waved their towel in the sold out arena. The cheering crowd will need to keep the enthusiasm to carry them in the 2nd round against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

John Smoltz - The golf debut of a someday Hall of Fame 23 year MLB pitcher from the Atlanta Braves on the Nationwide Tour turned out to be very disappointing when he shot 12 over 84. That ended the opening round with Smoltz in dead last in the opening round of the South Georgia Classic at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Smoltz as an amatuer did play in the Bob Hope Classic and AT&T Pebble Peach National Pro-Am. At the age of 43 he hopes to hone his skills and make it in the Champions Tour at age 50. With the drive of an athlete as hie pedigree we hope for the best and a turnaround from the dismal 84 shot in the Nationwide.
